"Koppenberg and Euros" - mid season report by Helen Wyman, European and 7x British Cyclo-cross Champion

A week in cycling can see many emotions. Rarely do you float through a week without issues and worries, but this week couldn't have been much better. Following a very disappointing 11th in the second round of the World Cup in Czech Republic last week, I returned to Belgium after a motivational speech from my coach hoping to turn things around.

There was lots of reason I didn't get a top result in World Cup although no excuses, but the next day I put things right in the SuperPrestige in Ruddervorde. I had confidence back in my legs. Last season, this turned out to be one of the best weeks of my career. I managed to win the Koppenberg Cross, which to me is the most important non-championship race on the World Calendar. I'd won it before, but it was a great feeling that was then backed up by winning the Euros in my homeland. I'm pretty sure I'll never get to ride a Major Championship in the UK again in my career so my motivation couldn't of been have higher.

Koppenberg Cross went well again this season. Margriet, one of my training chums from Oudenaarde set the race on fire through the first mud section. Nikki Harris then took over and towards the top of the cobbled berg I then passed by and pushed away with Sanne Cant. It was a good race on a surprisingly fast course and the battle went all the way to the line. I was really happy and it brings my cobble collection to 3, just 6 behind Sven now.

Moving on to the European Championship and the fact that defending a championship title is a very different thing. I know from being a British Champion in the past how to deal with it and I approached this race very differently to last year. It's no secret I'm not riding at the same level at this point of the season as I was last year. That is very much planned and I hope to build more towards to January. I believe in my plan and the coaching team around me so I just have to roll with the highs and lows. So there was nowhere near as much pressure on me to defend this title as I would of usually had.

The pre-ride of the course was good. To be honest I didn't like it much, but I'm sure the sticky mud wasn't everyone's idea of fun. I also had alarming good legs; a good indicator of good race day for me is terrible legs the previous day. So I went home hoping for a spot or two of rain to soften up the course and see if that could change it in my favour. So the overnight monsoon conditions were a little more than I could of dreamed of, but I took it. The warm up lap went well and I settled in my usual routine of pre-race banter with GB teammate Gabby Durrin. I had my lucky waffle and off I went to the start.

I've been starting well this season, but it seemed everyone brought a turbo charger to the line as I was left a short way off the lead going into the first off road section. I then got passed by some more riders and I was swimming in the mud in mid pack, exactly where I didn't want to be. However some encouragement and calming words from the pit and I set about making the return journey to the front of the race. By the second pit I'd taken over the front of the race and started to press on to get a gap. There was a section of the course that I seemed to be the only one riding and this gave me an advantage, allowing me to be fresher in the next sections and keep the pressure on. I'd taken 30 seconds by the end of the first lap, and entering the last lap with 1 minute 15, I took the decision to have a "play it safe" lap and try not to put a foot wrong.

It felt great to defend the title, particularly in Czech Republic where I'd had such a forgettable ride the weekend before. When presented the jersey by the chairman (I think that was his role) of Skoda on the podium, I informed him that I like Skoda as my husbands team is sponsored by them. I'm not entirely sure he understood me but smiled anyway.

Now it's onto other goals and I'm going to take a weekend off racing to focus on getting fitter and stronger and ready for the challenge of chasing the shadows of Vos and Compton come December and January.

Niels Albert wins 2013 UCI Cyclo-cross overall World Cup

Though he was 5th on the day, Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) did enough to win the 2013 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup overall title at Hoogerheide, Netherlands on Sunday.

The slick, snowy course proved to be a challenge with many riders crashing during the race.

Simon Zahner (EKZ) claimed his first cyclo-cross podium result by holding of a late charge from Sven Nys.

Niels Albert, his team mates at BKCP - Powerplus and many of the other top World Cup Cyclo-cross riders choose SwissStop's Yellow King  brake pad compound for carbon wheels to deliver stopping power in the toughest race conditions.

Cadel Evan's Giro Prologue TT Bike

Team BMC has built a new and completely custom time trial frame and fork for current UCI World Champion Cadel Evans. This leaves barely enough room for the side pull front brake caliper - which can be seen outfitted with SwissStop's RacePro Yellow King pads.

2009 RATA Race Across The Alps

Mike Cotty completed the 2009 Race Across The Alps on Saturday June 20. The event featured 526 km of riding with roughly 13,000 m of climbing. After the race Mike reports:

"That was one crazy race!  Had everything.  Snow storms, rain, sunshine.  Insane.

10th overall. Solid ride from start to finish. Brake pads were perfect!

I had two bikes but I only used the climbing bike with Cosmic Carbone and SwissStop pads as there was no need to change.  So, with all that descending (with all the grit and rain) I wore the front pads out by half so a pretty amazing wear rate really!

Long drive home.  5am start tomorrow!  Nothing like a bit of good recovery!  Ha!

Thanks for your support.

Mike

Gone For a While - riding from Berne to Beijing

In August 2008 Rita and Christian departed from their home in Berne, Switzerland on a year long, intercontinental cycling journey to Beijing, China.

They are now well into their trip and currently enjoying the mild winter conditions of Iran. The two are also experiencing the culture of the region first hand. In their online journal they write "We are puzzled and astonished by the events. On the way out from the restaurant, we ask the owner what this was all about. He smiles calmly and friendly, says that this is just the way it is, and that the police left again after he paid them 10'000 Tuman (10 Dollars). "

To read more about the bicycle travels of Rita and Christian, and for photos and information on the two cyclists, please visit their web site www.goneforawhile.ch

For this year long journey Rita and Christian were very selective with their equipment. "...just stable, reliable, repairable stuff" they say. Their bikes are fitted with 2008 XT disc brakes, which are equipped with SwissStop disc brake pads.

Richard Feldman's Colnago C-50 Cross

Richard Feldman (Durance Cycleworks – Lehman Brothers) is both the current leader of the USGP of Cyclocross Series (Masters 35+) and current Cyclocross National Champion in Masters 35+. He won the National Championship title last December in Providence, RI, in a determined effort on board his trusted Colnago C-50 Cross. Each component is hand picked by Feldman himself and he chooses the very lighweight and adjustable combination of Christian Heule's custom pad holders and SwissStop's Race2000 Yellow King pads to deliver braking power to his wheels.  Feldman builds his wheels himself using Zipp 285s carbon tubulars, Campagnolo Record hubs, and DT Swiss Spokes. On November 25, 2007, Feldman claimed victory at a very muddy regional event in his home state of Idaho, stating "Conditions were muddy and the Swisstop brake pads were essential to getting the speed down on the slick sections.".

Bay State Cyclocross - Sterling, Mass.

Jeremy Powers (Cyclocrossworld.com) claims victory in Sterling, Mass.

Race report from crossnut.com

Round #5 of the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series Milkowski & Powers Triumph in the Cold

STERLING, Mass (November 24, 2007) _ Under crystal blue skies with dry but chilly weather, the Bay State Cyclocross welcomed New England cyclocrossers to the wintry weather that many have been awaiting all season.

Elite Men.

On the first lap, a trio of Massachusetts-based riders pulled away and spent the next 55 minutes cheerfully hammering on each other, like a lovably dysfunctional family sitting down to a cyclocross feast.

Jeremy Powers (Cyclocrossworld.com), Jesse Anthony (Jamis) and Tim Johnson (Leer-Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld) appeared equally matched.

From the swoopy turns - each with varying recipes of thawed to frozen grass as the late November sun got lower; to the garden-level barrier grotto, with its steep off-camber entry and exit; to the grassy, leaf covered run-up, with an eye-watering descent leading to the waist-high Horse Jump; the trio continually battered each other, seeking advantage.

The key turned out to be the run-up - and Powers's willingness to attempt to ride it, even though his success rate would have discouraged many.

On the first lap, Johnson charged into the lead and rode to within a yard of the top, then stalled and fell. Next lap, the lead trio had formed - with U23 star Jamie Driscoll (Fiordi-Fruita) close behind.

This time Powers sprinted into the run up - and fell at the top, allowing Anthony and Johnson to get a gap that took Powers spent the next lap closing.

Next lap, Powers tried again on the run-up - and made it - picking up an instant gap that Anthony and Johnson slowly pulled back. For the next 40 minutes, the three seemed to call a truce on the run-up, dismounting a conservative three or four bike lengths from the top.

In the final lap, Powers and Anthony gapped a fading Johnson. It looked like a match sprint as the two circled the running track. If Anthony could get to the run up first, he could block Powers from attempting to ride it. If Powers got a clear line, he could ride it and get a substantial gap with less than a lap to go. But his record for riding it was one-for-two and his eyes were blurry from the cold.

Anthony hammered down the track's back stretch, but Power's attacked and led into the climb. He nearly stalled with his front wheel inches from the crest, but muscled over the top while Anthony ran. By the time he dropped into the descent, he had five bike lengths, which he increased by the finish. Anthony held on to second - and his Verge series leader's jersey. Johnson rolled in third and Mark McCormack outsprinted Driscoll to take fourth.

KONA's Wendy Simms wins Canadian National CX Championship

Wendy Simms won the both the Canadian National Championship and British Columbia Provincial Championship on back to back days in Kamloops B. C. She had been waiting for a weekend like this after a frustrating mountain bike season and inconsistent start to the cyclocross season. This weekend she proved she is one of the top Elite women cyclocross athletes as she added a 3rd and her most impressive Canadian National Cyclocross Championship to her resume.

The women’s field was loaded with talent as some of the best cyclocross racers and former mountain bike world champion set to do battle. The course was very tight and twisty with not a lot of good places to pass or form fast pace lines. Each bit of the course seemed to benefit each rider in different ways, Simms through the technical sections, Lyne Bessette in the power sections and Alison Sydor in the corners. As a result the race turned out to be very tactical and came down to the final 150 meters.

From the gun the three top riders-Simms, Bessette and Sydor drove a hard pace and distanced themselves from the main field. Bessette was intent on driving the race from the front while the other riders marked her throughout. Simms sat second wheel for much of the race deciding to take the tactical approach that paid off. “Lyne likes to race from front and you have to respect the power that she has. I told myself to play it smart Wendy Simms today even though I wanted to test Lyne a bit sooner than I did. I played one card early and she marked my attack right away so I knew she had good legs and was going to be battle all day,” said Simms.

Simms executed her race plan to perfection. As she pre-rode the course she picked some sections where she would attack. As the race progressed she watched the other riders she knew she had picked the right spots. She wanted to go earlier but her pit crew told her to be patient and let the race come to her. That she did and on the final lap she attacked on section that Bessette had been faster through and was able to get the lead. This allowed Simms to go into the next technical section, which she had been riding faster, with a bit of a gap that she was able to increase. From there it was 150 meters to the finish as Sydor pulled off a daring but clean pass on Bessette that allowed Simms to sprint solo to the line for the win.

BC Provincial Championships the day before was much the same. A full race of cat and mouse with Simms and Bessette riding together and trading leads throughout the race. Both wanted to win but both were also saving some legs for the Canadian Championships the next day. The two were together the whole race and all the way down the finish straight and Simms was able to barely out sprint Bessette for the BC Provincial Championship Win.
